Residual stresses - Hocus-Pocus or real value?
Our free webinar on the topic of residual stresses
Thursday, January 14, 2027
3.00 pm - 3.30 pm (CET)
Residual stresses are an often underestimated property of your components that determines their service life. For example, the presence of a specific residual stress state can significantly increase the allowable number of load cycles for components subjected to alternating loads or shift the allowable load amplitude to much wider ranges. On the other hand, unfavorable residual stress states can cause a component to fail after an unexpectedly short period of service. Therefore, it is always worthwhile to address the topic of residual stresses.
In this webinar, Dr.-Ing. Oliver Maiß answers the following questions, among others:
-
What exactly are residual stresses?
-
How do residual stresses affect component strength?
-
How can I introduce residual stresses safely and efficiently?

Surface Engineering through mechanical processing
The properties of a surface can be specifically and reliably imparted using mechanical surface treatment processes. This allows the desired functions of the components to be achieved cost-effetively and reproducibly.
The best-know mechanical surface treatment processes:
Shot blasting

Roller burnishing
Diamond smoothing

Mechanical pressing of a diamond hemisphere into the surface. The pressing causes the diamond to rub against the surface, thereby smoothing it.
Machine hammer peening
